Kick and Run
Manufacturer: Taito
Year: 1986

Ah, football. We know it as the Beautiful Game, and it inspires passions across the world. Sadly though, most of us have little actual skill at physically playing the game, and certainly not enough skill to play in the World Cup. Fortunately, that's where video games can help out, and in this case, Taito have helped us out with Kick and Run.

You start with a choice of six teams: England, Italy, Brazil, West Germany, Argentina and Japan. Once you make your choice, your team will face off against the other five, and if you can beat them all you will win the tournament. Once you've made your choice, the players run out onto the pitch. This is when you notice that the animation is not that great. You will also notice that the game does not give each team shirt colours that are representative of real life. Really, this should have been the easiest thing to get right. Another thing you will notice is that the sound is really quite poor. The crowd whistles like a bird outside your window at dawn, and is very annoying. All the other noises are substandard too.

Playing the game is not that difficult. You've got one button for passing the ball, and one for shooting. Holding down the button alters the distance that your pass or shot will cover. If you haven't got the ball, one button will launch you into the air in an attempt to head the ball, and the other button will launch you into the air in an attempt to break the opponent's legs (otherwise known as a sliding tackle). Should your opposition get to your penalty box, it's likely they'll have a shot on goal. In this instance, you use the joystick and button to control your goalkeeper. He can run around the box and dive in his efforts to stop the ball, but be careful, as you tend to control him for too long and end up running right out of position!

The game might be simple to play, but it's difficult to master, or even get the hang of. The other teams all want to win just as much as you do. Also against you are the rules of this particular tournament. If you are not winning the game at half time, it's game over, so you'd better be aggressive and try and force a lead. Should you make it into the second half, only for the game to end with the scores tied, then you will go into a penalty shootout. The winner of the shootout goes on to the next round.

And that's about it. The teams are running out of the tunnel, so you'd better get your boot laces tied and join them, it's time for you to Kick and Run!

MOZI love football, and any chance I get to play a football video game is one I usually take with great pleasure. However, after repeated play of Kick and Run, I felt a little less in love with the game. It's not that different to other football arcade games out there. It has the same viewpoint, the same style of tournament etc., but I just didn't find it much fun to play. Everything feels more difficult to do compared to, say, World Cup 90. Passing accurately takes too much work, tackling opponents is hit and miss, and goalkeeping is almost impossible. The game looks ok, although the sound is very poor, but all in all I just didn't enjoy this game, and enjoyment is what it's all about.

Zaxxon1Kick and Run... I'm guessing whether it's the worst arcade soccer ever, but it's at least one of the worse! We'll see almost all sort of sillinesses: fantastic actions, incredible mistakes as the kick off, goalkeeper often moves randomly or does it have any real brain?!? Also, there's no ground side change after the first half. It looks like a parody of a soccer game, not a real simulation. I've had enough of it!
Presentation is not so bad, featuring naive and funny graphics, but I hate that terrible whistle made by the referee... it's so sharp it makes me want to disable my sound card. In-game tune is nice, maybe it's the best part of this rubbish.
Avoid this game! Playing Exciting Soccer is much funnier even though graphics is terrible. Please, Taito, don't try making soccer games anymore! I wish no Kick and run 2 was ever produced... please someone tell me so.

Roy JonesOh God, I didn't play Kick and Run since I was 12... It's a jump back to the past... I think I played it on a huge 4-player cabinet with my friends, and I probably had a different points of view (well I hope so, since I'm 25 now...) and enjoyed soccer videogames a lot.
After over ten years I have to amit I felt really exhalted at playing it! Graphics are simple but it doesn't matter (well, game was released in 1986), and this game's there for your fun... and fun is guaranteed! The ball flying beyond the goal line, the desperate goalkeeper crying on his knees, the opponent team jumping in happiness, wow! Sounds are very simple (well maybe too much simple!) and they're not that great. Tunes too... a real pity. I won't mention the absence of some sort of tutorial - well there's not much to know... that's soccer!
You must try it, even if you just want to see the player scoring a goal and falling down on his knees and praying!
