Roll of drums... ladies and gentleman...... This is Bubble Bobble 2! Curtain raises while the
public clap the hands and on the stage there are all characters of this new adventure. Before starting let's make a step
backwards to Bubble Bobble... where Hyper Drunk was defeated by Bub and Bob, remember? In this adventure Hyper Drunk is back,
menacing more than before.
Little Bubbly, little Bobby, Kululun, Cororon, Bubby, all together happily reading a book.....
Hyper Drunk thunders: "Now is the time to get my revenge for what your parents did to me!" shacking his fist to
the sky.
"The time for revenge has come... Now is the time to turn their children into bubble-blowing dragons!"
|
The four children were transformed by a magic spell into dragons and banished to live in a
strange new world.
Will they ever be able to return to their own bodies and to their world?
We'll find the answer to that question only by starting to play from the first to the 56th round: trap the many enemies into
bubbles, jump and pop them with your head; pick up bonuses in the shape of food; pick up sweets and objects which will
increase your dragon abilities, and various items which will allow you to pass easily the following round; find out secret
rooms full of diamonds.
As in Bubble Bobble some bubbles contain letters, with an extra life awarded if the word EXTEND is composed.
|
|
|
At the end of each round (identified by a letter and by the number of stages) we will find
the boss. Enemies, as well as bosses, are all taken from other Taito games: more than Bubble Bobble characters, there are
references to the omnipresent Darius, Space invaders, Kiki kaikai, etc...
The first boss we'll meet is Hyper Drunk, the old Bubble Bobble boss. He doesn't throw as many wine bottles as in the
previous game. He usually stays in the middle of the screen.
We have several chances to defeat him: with lightning, rainbows, wind, depending on which kind of magic pot we happen to
find.
Radish land's boss is a Clown with magical powers: he will throw fireballs in 8 directions from each hand and will
hurl his own head at you. Hit either the head or the body to hurt him.
|
Manuke, Kiki Kaikai world: she's a cute girl wearing a Tanooki suit. She will
levitate and wave a wand which conjures up whirling leaves. If you walk under her, she will become stone and do nothing.
When you're to the left or right of her, she may become a raccoon which blows letters P, O, N and paw-shapes at you. These
objects will bounce on the ground and may travel high up, so watch the top of the screen for falling shapes.
Super invader, TV Machine world: the Super Invader is a space invader. It has a seemingly normal space invader
guarding both sides of itself, and four rows of normal space invaders below it. There are four indestructible shields to
stop the invaders' shots (but not the boss' 5-shot spread shot). You use winds to destroy the space invaders as they move
slowly down.
|
|
|
The winds will not injure the Super Invader at this point. Don't worry about the invaders
reaching the bottom of the screen: when they reach the top of the shields, they go back up. You won't lose, like you would
in the original Space Invaders. Note: if you don't destroy the invader rows quickly, a bonus saucer will fly across the
screen: hit it with a whirlwind and it will crash to the ground. A 3000 pt fruit will appear.
Yamato Crab, Sun "A" Zone world: The great huge-battleship Yamato arises as the shell for a giant crab
mecha. The only weapon you can use on the Yamato Crab is lightning. It is easiest to hit it by standing on the second level,
facing the wall, and blowing lightning bubbles. This will hit the Yamato shell and any Zero fighters that fly out from it.
It will not damage the arcing missiles.
|
Warorin Mecha, Pyramid Land, Central Park: He's a mecha version of a Warorin.
Father Mighta, Forest Land, Treasure Desert: This is a Giant Mighta. He wears a cape and carries a scepter.
Queen Monsta, Japanesque: This is a Giant Monsta. He wears a cape and crown.
Hyper Drunk Puppet and Sorcerer Drunk, final level: The Hyper Drunk, attached to puppet strings this time.
Once it is defeated, a drunk wearing a papal miter drifts down toward you.
|
|
|
This is the Sorcerer Drunk (aka Papal Drunk). First, the Sorcerer will shoot several beams
at one of you. If it hits you, you're dead. When that beam hits the floor, a wall of fire will form and head in your
direction. If the floor below you is on fire and you're on the platform above, beware the tip of the fire as it moves.
Eventually, he'll create a shield of booze jugs that surround him. Every so often, he'll propel one toward you or your
partner. When it hits the ground, six snowflakes of death fly out at 60-degree angles. On rare occasions, a destroyed jug
will cause a blue diamond to appear.
Once you've destroyed the shield of jugs, the Sorcerer Drunk will fly away. He will then plummet to the floor at high speed,
his staff will form a sphere of fire that explodes into several fireballs when he lands.
During the game some musical notes will appear, if you collect three of them, of the same color, a big coloured key will
appear, well pick it up, because without the four keys you cannot open the door to the final level.
|
In certain levels if you wait for the 'Hurry Up!' to appear some transparent bubbles
containing letters will appear. Take them and if the word R O D is formed a Giant Rod will drop from the sky and
will surround you with an energy field. Anybody you touch while this exists will become a diamond. All enemies become
diamonds when the field dissipates and the dragons will have become human.
Once defeated Sorcerer Drunk game ends, but there are several endings: if you beat the Sorcerer Drunk without the ROD you
cannot change yourselves back to human form, then the four kids remain in the magical land because they can't go back to
our world as dragons. If you beat the Sorcerer Drunk and you grabbed the ROD previously, you were transformed back into
humans: so, afterwards you are able to go back home.

Bubble Bobble 2 (Bubble Symphony)
surprises for having the same playability of its predecessor, Bubble Bobble, with the addiction of a funny and very colourful
graphics, sometimes even too much (the background's colors can make the player flustered). During the presentation we can read the
origin from which the game came, with several screens. Explanation of how to play, score table and demo, big sequence of closing
credits. Large variety of high quality music, always pertinent on the game situations, such as sound effects. The graphic part is
absolutely faultless, some background are impressive (especially after having seen other F3 system game, like Arkanoid Returns),
there is a great animation and sprite definition, and a touch of humor during the game. More playability, immediately involving,
infinite number of enemies to trap and wonderful bosses: an exciting platform game....
Very nice presentation... it isn't the
usual demo: there are enemies introductions, characters specifications, and the film about what happened before... To see it all
you need a while, but for the first time you can make a little sacrifice. Graphics improved a lot since first chapter, not only in
movements but, also and especially, in the cartoonish style of the characters even more likable (it's too funny when you don't
move the dragon for a bit and he falls asleep), and in the backgrounds, different for each world... But there is a big fault:
often objects available blur with the background, lowering the playability in many levels (especially the ones where background is
animated).
Another fault is sound... it's not one of the best ones, you could get used to it, but the "circus style" music it's not
my kind.
Apart from that, although it's the second chapter and it has on its shoulder the weight of the comparison with one of the best
games ever seen, it comes out very well! There are so many news that you have the feeling to find yourself in front of a new game,
all to discover... Would you like a quick preview? The possibility to select, further than our old friends, also two other female
friends, so even girls can choose the most alike character... what's more is that every character has his own particular
features.
It seems that the name "Bubble" has a sort of magnetic mystic power... there is nothing to do if once you've started
playing you must carry on... this is also helped by the fact that at the end of each world, after the final boss - I'm revealing
you the most important news... - you can choose the next world, with different enemies and difficulties.
Without any doubt this is a game to try: Taito team has done a great job... and you don't want them to be sad to know that you
don't play it? Do you??
