This time it's a dangerous situation: an entire Japanese family
has disappeared miysteriously while travelling to an unknown place to on board of an odd ark.
A peasant spread the voice first, then from mouth to mouth it
reached every single villeger. He swore he'd seen a monstruos creature coming out of the
underworld and take the ark away!
Actually the smallest child of the kidnapped dad didn't join the
family on the journey, because he had to keep on cultivating their land. He's been toched by the
hand of luck and survived the kidnap and he's the only one capable of saving and taking them back
home.
Two centuries ago in Japan, many stories were told filled with
mysteries and supernatural events: monsters coming out of darkness were ready to dominate the human
race by the power of their strenght. This happened in Kiki-KaiKai's story too - and we don't
know the reason why spirits from the underworld kidnapped the poor family... |
At first sight, game looks similar to Ikari Warriors and
Commando, but with an "ancient Japanese folk" atmosphere. The main character moves
around eight directions, trying to defend himself by the attacks of opponents coming from the
underworld: he throws cards/scrolls with obscure magician runes written upon them. Monsters will
explode when touched by the powerful magic - well, a few enemies (those nasty human-headed snakes
for example) require to be hit many times before going back to where they came from.
Player can control an additional weapon by operating the secondary
action button. An odd flag appears, waving back and forth and blowing foes away - this is very
useful when they are able to avoid our "bullets" and come closer to our hero!
Magic cards/spells are a short-range weapon at first, and their
offensive capability is quite low too, but can be powered up by collecting runes which can be found
on the floor after destroying a complete formation of red flames-shaped enemies, or waving the flag
in front of small green temples. |

Pearls can be collectd too, and activated by pressing both action
buttons at once: they are "smart bombs".
Game takes place in mystical places which scroll in any directions.
It's a classic multi-directionally scrolling shoot'em up. Enemies are in the shape of ghosts,
skeletons, ogres, crawling creatures, spectres as fast as light. At first they will try to knock our
hero down by simply touching him, then they will also shoot against him, so beware of them!
And what about the completiong of each area... wouldn't you wish to
pass levels without having to smash down a giant odd and funny guardian? The more he gets hurt by
the cards/spells, the more he appears as falling into pieces - in pure "manga" style!
As soon as he's defeated, a member of our hero's family is free and goes
safely at home. |

A videogame with quite a bit of
action though the plot is quite
trivial... A funny game by the way.
1986,
the year when Kiki-KaiKai was released, was certainly a very lucky time for Taito. Other
successful videogames were released as Arkanoid, Darius, Bubble Bobble,
Renegade, Alcon, Tokio, Empire City, NY Captor and many more. In the
same time, less lucky videogames were released too...
This videogame is a top-quality one too with great playability, a typical Japanese "manga"
atmosphere based on legends and tales coming from ancient times: it's really good-looking!
Sprites are varying and odd - area bosses especially: crushing them and seeing them going into pieces is
so funny!
Intro is pure genius, it's quite unusual for an arcade videogame since was a main feature in console
games only.
What about sounds? Musics is extremely simple but it contributes in creating an incredible atmosphere.
In-game and hi-score table sound effects and are adequate and fit each situation.
Lastability is very high since the difficulty level is well-balanced. There are hard sections by the way
where you might even loose all lives in a few seconds!
Summarizing, it's another Taito success... not as famous as Bubble Bobble, but at least it's as
funny as that!
Very
nice indeed! Looks like a female version of Bonze's Adventure...
Graphics are very well drawn both for sprites and environment, and it's perfect for such genre of
videogames. Once again I have to admit I felt it quite hard to make my way into the game (I use to have
this problem with all shoot'em ups) but at least the cartoonish style of enemies makes fight look
easier - even though they are hundreds! I especially like the "flying umbrellas" heh!
Background tunes and sound effects are also very cool and perefct for this videogame!
A must try, believe me!
