Gals Panic
Manufacturer: Kaneko
Year: 1990

Get ready for some pure... ehm naked action. It's time for Gals Panic from Kaneko. This game was released in 1990 and was surely inspired by the well-known Super Qix. And just as in the old classic, you have to uncover a picture with an undefined object that represents you. Right after throwing in some virtual coins into our virtual arcade machine you get to select... well, a gal of course. After that you find yourself seeing a screen, filled with a woman-like silhouette, a spider and a small, rectangular shaped, green thing... that's you! As long as you are moving at the edge of the screen you have a forcefield around you that protects you from enemies, in this case the spider. But your enemies are manyfold. There is always one main enemy (the spider, a fireball and a pyramid-shaped object) from which many smaller creatures (small spiders, flames... you get the point) spawn.

But let's get to the thing that interests people willing to play this game, that's the gals. As I said before, you choose from six different Japanese girls, with such lustful names as Marina, Nami and Emi. These girls are the women-like silhouettes. They glow. You can start uncovering them by flying over the screen and covering "chunks" of the screen. Whenever you reach the edge again, and have outlined an area, that part of the screen becomes uncovered. Now, for this game the only important thing to uncover is the glowing silhouette of course. From each girl there are three nicely-drawn pics, each one showing the same pose with the girls having lesser clothes on their body. To finish one of three stages for each girl you have to uncover at least 80% of her. After the third drawn pic you get one that shows a real photograph of the girl.

Of course it's not that easy to do that: apart from the enemies that can destroy you by touching either your green thing or the line you draw behind you (because the forcefield disappears of course when you leave the edge), there are two factors that make gal-unclothing an not so easy task: there is a time limit and it causes your sudden death as it expires.

The other problem is a gauge that gets lesser, the more you uncover the gals. When you reach a certain point, your gal will transform into something you don't really want to uncover: a sheep, a panda or a ninja. You can only revert that uninteresting picture by either uncovering stuff outside of the silhouette or by outlining a bonus item that refills your gauge. There are different bonus items: a clock that makes your enemies stop moving, the gaugerefiller, an UFO that attacks smaller enemies etc. Oh and by the way, if you happen to uncover over 80% while your gal is a panda, or one of the other unpleasant thingies, you have to repeat that stage again.

In between stages you get to a small bonus stage in which there are two dwarves who spin a roulette for you. You can either get something positive (bonus time or energy on the gauge), something negative (less time or energy on the), something neutral (it's called "Break time" and the dwarves dance for you) or nothing at all. It's not really important what you get at the roulette since you die pretty often in this game, and you have three lives only. So whenever you use another credit your gauge and time is refreshed.

The sound in this game is pretty uninteresting: melodies are playing in the background but you won't really notice them. There are some sound samples however. Yes yes, the gals speak to you, saying such luscious things like: "Please be gentle" or "I am your target", whatever that means. During the act of uncovering itself you also get some short samples, which are meant to motivate you to continue the uncovering. These samples include sounds like "aaaah" and "oooooh". Well then, get to playin'!

TalasOh my, why should I always test these sexy-hexy-no-good games? Well apart from graphics, which look really nice, and the girls you see (only a few of which are pretty), nothing really seems to be good in this game. The sound is crap, samples repeat themselves over and over, gameplay is unfair since you die very, very often and the what you get to see after hard playing is... well not really worth it. Well I'd say if there are really people out there who play such games purposefully then OK, I guess they will find what they want. For all the others: try it and you'll see that you'll rather want to play something else!

MADrigalWell I don't dislike Gals Panic as Talas does... Of course I prefer playing its sequel Gals Panic S2 which has a much better playability but I have to admit this first episode is no bad at all. It's quite hard to manage, and if you still think that "who dares wins", you will change your mind with this videogame: the keywords are "be cautious"!
Technically speaking, it could be doen much better, at least for graphics. Sprites are well animated but quite ugly to see, though I like the "manga"-style mood of the whole game. It's a perfect Japanese videogame heh!
Pictures of naked girls are digitized and retouched quite well - well I'd choose prettier girls though. As for sounds, I like the effects but the tunes are very boring!
You'll probably want to try this game (and you probably did it already, didn't you?) and have fun if you have lots of money to spend with it because it's soo hard!

Zaxxon1Though being a by-product of Qix, released long after the first episode and with the addition of apparently attractive backgrounds, I believe that Gals Panic is one of the most boring videogames I ever played.
Attract mode is average but... well it doesn't show how to play the game! What else... usual options, graphics and sounds are boring too.
The naked pictures seem to be the most important thing, but if you're content with such rubbish you must be masochist.
Avoid it.

Roy JonesWoho, I gotcha, dirty players! So you like undressing girls, eh? ...kidding of course! Well  here's another "softcore" puzzle games, I'm not very used to this genre (I think I've seen three or four total) but I have to say this one is funny. Oh yes, the pictures are really badly drawn but this doesn't matter: the game is fun, and that's a fact! Difficulty level is well-balanced and I especially like the 2-player cooperative mode option.
Graphics are nice for both visual effects and the playground border animations, and the soundtrack is perfect for this videogame, hey it puts me under pressure when I'm about to complete the stage... the monster also accelerates as music does... And oh, I still didn't understand the addition/subtraction factors!
