All right, this is one of those games I wasn't allowed to play while I was a kid because it has... uhm... erotic contents. It's Puzznic from Taito and it was released in 1989. Well... since we all were young once and never really listenend to such prohibitions, let's refresh our memories on this game which stands in the tradition of Strip Poker and the like. So guys, in order to catch the right mood, now lock the door, so mom won't enter your room while you play this game. As the name itself states, Puzznic is (of course) a puzzle game, so let's take a closer look.
If you you wait a few instants before inserting coins, you will be introduced with a demonstration on how to play the game. It's about some kind of mazes where we notice various multi-coloured blocks. In addition, to better keep them apart, blocks are also marked with different symbols like cubes, pyramids, cones, spheres and the like.

The trick is to place similar blocks one against each other, so that they disappear - this might look easy at the very beginning of the game. There's a statistics screen to the left, which keeps you informed on how many blocks of each type are still there in the current stage. That helps a lot since the easiest thing is to just couple two blocks of the same type... but you can't do that if you have three of the same type, since then one would be left alone and you'd lose, D'OH!
Coupling two blocks scores 100 points, whereas bringing together three blocks gets you 200 points. You score many more points by combining the disappearance of more blocks, similarly as in the game Columns (a coinop made by Sega): since coupled blocks disappear, the ones above them will fall below, and might couple too... and so on in a sort of "chain reaction" which scores a lot of points.

the very first maze
game is becoming hard quickly...

You'll sometimes find moving stones inside of mazes, on which you can put blocks, thus transporting them to a different place in the stage - this is something making mazes much more interesting! Notice that the game is ruled by the physical law of gravity so there is one general direction your blocks will move to: downwards!
You have to get rid of all those blocks to finish one stage and by doing so to uhm... well... uncover a picture in the background. In case you make some mistake, there are two "retries" (they work as lives in usual videogames) which allow you to repeat the last move. There is also a time limit to complete your job, and it varies from 30 seconds to 2:30 minutes.
The quicker you are, the more points you get: you get bonus points per each second left.

Depending on the stage, bonus varies from 100 (at level 1) to 800 points (at level 4) per second. If you are very fast, like having over 30 seconds or one minute left, you'll get a fat bonus, which also gets more from level to level. Bonus is worth 10000 points at first, and it increases quickly. Also, the more points you get at the end of a stage, the quicker the picture in the background is revealed.
Pictures show us some uh... I guess Japanese gals (maybe some Chinese ones too), half naked. They have such luscious names like Tracy, Candy and Tina. There also is a course map (as seen in Darius) at the end of each level, where you can choose which way you want to go. Each level consists of 4 stages. After you finish the first eight levels the map won't appear anymore: you just keep on playing till level nine after which level number goes back to one. There are about ten different girls to be "uncovered".

the course map
censored!

And all you guys, don't forget those dip switches the way I always do. By operating them you can change a few game options like getting rid of those confusing naked pictures; "bombs" are another nice option: you'll be able to get rid of those blocks you don't know where to put at; finally, if the game is too hard for you, you can even change the number and effect of "retries" so that you wont only get to retry your last move, but the whole stage. Yes, the dip switches can be good indeed!
After two hours of puzzling I finished the map maze, and uh... seeing all there is to be seen, I think I can say that there is no ending to this game. There are quite a lot of stages with different approaches on the problem of getting blocks together.

TalasCome to think of it, I'm a really lucky guy: I reviewed two games out of two, both have no real ending... talk about playing infinite games while hoping to see an ending screen D'OH! I think this is a very interesting puzzle game. In fact, they didn't really need to put those naked girls into the game: it would have been interesting enough if you'd ask me.
Graphics are nothing special - well that's not unusual: it is a puzzle game after all! The girls' graphics do look good for being a videogame from the Eighties. As for the sound, it's nothing special: you can keep it on or turn it off, it won't make any noticeable difference.
Game is very challenging, with such interesting puzzle riddles, though I have to say that the game balance is not that good: there are bonehard stages where you need a lot of tries before you figure out how to clear them... and right after that comes some very easy stage which you finish in around ten seconds!
All those who like puzzle games will find some fun with this game. All those who seek nice girls... well, get a girlfriend!

MADrigalI love this videogame, I've always loved it both in arcades and on my good old C64. Even though I find those erotic pictures quite ridiculous if compared to other sexy videogames of the same era (Poker Ladies was much better in my opinion), gameplay is really entertaining and... puzzling! Together with its "brother" Plotting, I think Puzznic is one of the most innovative and brain-squasher videogames ever. And once again we have clue that Taito game designers were really really skilled guys!

Zaxxon1Puzzic is one of those games you'll be addicted to if you play it! You'll want to prove yourself you're more intelligent than CPU and able to solve all puzzles. At first you'll think you can do that (earlier stages are really simple) then you'll also be required to join speed to intelligence - that's very hard! I believe this is one of the best emulated videogames by Raine.
Presentation and graphics are good enough to introduce you to the game, also sound fits the game needs - not very important in a videogame of this genre actually, since gameplay is the most important thing!
I personally prefer customizing the board's DIP-switches in order to enable bombs (you'll need them sooner or later) and "retries" to make level restart from the beginning. This way game is a bit easier and you'll find it much more hooking. And oh! I also disabled the nudes backgrounds because I find them ugly and inadequate.

RoyJThe game is not so bad... graphics lacks personality - but it's useless actually (despite of those naked girlies)... have to think twice about it: it's a peculiar puzzle-game. As I played it, I recollected when I played Soko-Ban with my old 80286-based PC. Of course Puzznic is on an higher level than Soko-Ban - also, it's an arcade! Unfortunately, due to its innermost nature, as soon as you'll solve all puzzles you'll hardly go back and play it over and over again - though there are plenty of puzzles actually.
By the way it's well worth a try, in my opinion you also have to try Soko-Ban and see where Puzznic comes from!

RedhotAs most of puzzle games in existance, this is a kind of arcade featuring average audio and graphics and an high hookability. Gameplay is really well-balanced: the real challenge begins on level three, so you have time to get used with the controls and the "retry" system. In advanced levels, challenge is really high and game becomes frustrating, turning the game from a good puzzle to a coin-eater arcade. I spent about 15/20 minutes to complete certain stages, spending around ten virtual coins to clear the field. However I think this is a good puzzle game, thougn not being that original (how can a puzzle game be original?) but really funny.
